Natural Science Publications 2023 – 2024

The page contains publications submitted to print after the start of the sad events in Ukraine. It may be regarded as a Portuguese period of my work.

To the articles about the report there were included, in addition to the members of the organizing committee, all those who actively worked on editing. So there was a place for me among the authors.

Shatrovskiy, A. G., Angus, R. B. (2023) Helophorus bivari sp. n. from the Azores (Coleoptera: Helophoridae). Koleopterologische Rundschau, Bd. 93. S. 205−209.

António Bivar de Sousa, 15.12.2023, Lisboa

Helophorus bivari sp.n. (Coleoptera: Helophoridae) from the Azores is described, illustrated, and compared with the most similar species of the subgenus Rhopalohelophorus KUWERT, 1886: H. asturiensis KUWERT, 1885 and H. rinki ANGUS, 1985.

While sorting through the material in the collections of the Museum in Lisbon, I discovered a unique specimen. Robert confirmed its status as a new species, and we decided to describe it together. As mentioned in the text, the new species is named after António Bivar de Sousa, specialist of Lepidoptera, and founder (and president) of the Portuguese Entomological Society (Sociedade Portuguesa de Entomologia). He also collected this specimen on the island of St. Miguel.
I want to say a some words about this great person. At the time of this description, he was 92 years old – which does not prevent him from remaining active in entomology and publishing richly illustrated books on butterflies of Africa. And before retiring, this man worked… as a police chief.

A checklist of species belonging to six families of the suborder Poliphaga has been compiled. It includes 118 species (4 additional species have been found in the vicinity of the Park) and is based on material collected from arthropod faunal assemblages in the Park.

Sasha Kravchenko decided to sum up his scientific work in Shatsky Park and began to compile a faunistic list of beetles found in it. I was very pleased to receive an offer to become a co-author in the formation of a list of the superfamily of water scavenger beetles. The work was done quickly enough, and it was published even faster (many thanks to the editor-in-chief V. A. Korneev).

Shatrovskiy, A. G., Angus, R. B., Jäch, M. A. (2023) Notes on Helophorus guttulus-group (Coleoptera: Helophoridae). Koleopterologische Rundschau, Bd. 92, S. 139−151.

Full text

A review of the Helophorus guttulus group (Coleoptera: Helophoridae) is presented. Helophorus costulatus KUWERT, 1887 is synonymized with H. guttulus MOTSCHULSKY, 1860. A lectotype is designated for H. nivalis GIRAUD, 1852. Determination of the exact type localities of H. costulatus, H. dormitans (SHARP, 1916) and H. guttulus is discussed. Data on the distributions and a determination key for all five species of the group are presented.

This article has been in the works for three years. Of these, two years – by two co-authors, and one year – by three ones. I really felt the European level of requirements for publications and for each point on the map, for each figure. I would especially like to note the patience of my colleagues, and especially − Manfred. He acted here in two roles: both as a co-author and as the editor-in-chief of the entire issue. Manfred brilliantly worked out both roles, but what it cost to he is better not to even ask. And the result will be judged by colleagues.
