Natural Science Publications 1995 – 2005

I would call this period the years of revival: I managed to return to work in my speciality and to unfinished materials, to collect new material on the field excursions. New work at the Faculty of Economics of KhNU still requires more understanding of natural systems than social, and even more so − economic ones. Among results of these eleven years − one textbook and participation in one monograph.

The author’s course was supported by the release of this textbook with the Grief of the Ministry of Science and Education of Ukraine. Structural-evolutionary approach to the organization and evolution of natural systems goes through all content. It was possible to include here the structure and development of human society without violating the harmony of constructions.

A small circulation (300 copies) predetermined the low popularity of the book. The fact that I did not immediately post the publication in the public domain, I consider as my mistake. How can I fix it now. All that time, I hoped for an optimized re-release. Life judged otherwise. And yet, I look at the book only as a test of strength.

Organization and development of living systems. Simple criteria for separating the levels are proposed and the tendencies of evolution in them are specified. In total, it is proposed to consider six levels of organization, on each of which living organisms are present. The approaches of former authors to the grouping of living systems and their development are discussed.

To deal with this issue was prompted by the imperfection of existing classifications. I hope there is progress on this issue. The fate of the article was not easy. It was not possible to publish it in the journal of the Kharkiv Entomological Society: the Kyiv member of the editorial board V. G. Dolin spoke out against it. It was placed in another Kharkiv’s edition, but the journal turned out to be not rated. Therefore, the article remained inconspicuous. However, a few years later its main provisions were published in the journal KhES, but as a basis for creating databases in Microsoft Access. The article posted on popular information sites, but in Cyrillic (which limits its reading by foreign colleagues).

A hierarchy of urban systems is given on the basis of my previous conception. Localization of municipal problems is optimized according to the structure and capacity defined by the level of the organization.

As the teachers in the municipal system, the authors decided to adapt my classification of natural systems to rank municipal issues. In principle, the system turned out to be acceptable. But its acceptance by communal specialists requires a certain advancement, which the authors could not deal with.

The tables for definition include species of insects known at the time of publication. In general, the tables has not lost its relevance even after 20 years, although since then some genera have been revised and new species of water scavenger beetles were described.

In the reissue of the key to freshwater invertebrates, I was entrusted with compiling tables on the beetles of the superfamily Scavenger Water Beetles. Later, I understood my mistake: I did not include remote parts of Central Asia in the “adjacent territories.” There was planned as a publication for the territory of the former USSR. My colleague Sasha Kirejtshuk was appointed as the first author, and he was not formally: he owns the compilation of information on immature stages and significant corrections in the updated nomenclature, as well as basic information on the family Hydraenidae.

There is presented the hierarchical organization of natural systems, that are distributed in four functional rows, and each row is composed of structural levels. The criteria for separation of rows and levels are substantiated. The system is easy to use and was used by the author in teaching practice for various specialities. Subsequently, the development of social systems was substantiated by the author from the standpoint of the natural hierarchical structure.

The author is very glad about this publication. It reflects the author’s approach to the organization of natural systems as the basis for social ones. Like all innovations, this approach was greeted with dismay by fellow scientists, including the author of the negative review. The editors of the journal took an unexpected step: the review was published together with my article, and you can see for yourself how unfounded the claims against the author are. The main thing is that the concept edited in a scientific publication, and time will judge.

The Frank Balfour-Brown water-net modified by Robert Angus, and tested by the author for collecting aquatic insects, is described. The article contains sketches and practical recommendations for using the net.

I wanted to describe the net for a long time — from the moment I saw this tool at Robert in 1982. Robert’s consent was obtained, but it was possible to implement the plan only after 17 years. It was important for me to popularize this convenient design so that it would replace the traditional hydrobiological net for entomologists. In this case, the goal was achieved. The article is less, but I am proud of ones.

Full Text

Species of terrestrial scavenger water beetles of the genus Cercyon collected during the expeditions of P. K  Kozlov with V. I. Roborovskiy to Tibet and N. A. Zarudny to Iran are described.

Unfortunately, the species from Iran (C. ostentum m.) later will be replaced to the synonyms of the previously described species (C. circumcinctus Reitter, 1889), which has a more southern distribution. And another species (C. berlovi m.) was later independently described as C. signifier Hebauer, 2002 by an author who was unaware of this publication.

Key to the beetle families of the fauna of Ukraine, according to the figures made by A. Bartenev.

Sasha Bartenev’s long-standing idea to make such definitive tables in the Soviet Union (until 1991). Unfortunately, there was no support from the leading academic institutions at the time, as their publishing resources were full. It was possible to publish in Kharkiv, but at the same time limiting the territory of Ukraine. Opportunities were not fully realized − both in territory of coverage and in distribution among biologists.
